Challenge

Created in 2009 in Portland, Tilteed is limited edition t-shirt retailer with a growing community of artists and fans alike. Every tee is hand-printed and features independent artists from all over the world.

Tilteed approached us with the challenge of revamping their ExpressionEngine-powered site to fulfill some very specific goals, including:

  • Creating a design that would help conversion rates and appeal to their primary demographic
  • Upgrading as much of the system as possible
  • Building a new forum to increase community participation
  • Integrating modern-day social media features
  • Logging in to the site with Facebook
  • Completely rebuilding their shopping cart and checkout process
  • Automating certain administrative processes

Yep, we had our work cut out for us, but we were up for the challenge!

Solution

The site’s structure was slightly reorganized to make it easier to navigate without losing existing customers at launch. Design-wise, we focused on creating a layout that would resonate better with Tilteed’s primary demographic: guys between 15 and 35. And each major section of the site was carefully designed to improve usability, which in turn will help conversion rates.

The shopping cart functionality was completely rebuilt from the ground up to provide a more traditional and seamless checkout experience. That rebuild included live shipping rates and two payment method options (credit card or PayPal).

We provided a way for users to create an account traditionally through the site or by using their Facebook account and revamped the members’ area to highlight each user’s activity on the site, including submitted and winning designs.

The site was also built to make things easier for Tilteed staff. We automated as much as possible, including adding inventory counts that were missing from the previous system and an automatic “expiration” of the featured tee (which then gets moved to either the catalog or limited tee section of the site).
