We first started working with Bodies In Balance 4 years ago when they called us to "fix" their previous site's many browser and functionality issues. Since then we've provided maintenance and SEO support. Earlier this year they relocated to a downtown Portland location, prompting them to redesign their website. So that's what we helped them do.
Using their new studio space as inspiration (as well as their own goals and visual identity), we created a site that is contemporary and "rough around the edges" at the same time. The contemporary side of it is achieved primarily in the overall layout and coding that contains the site. The "rough around the edges" feel is directly related to their studio space, which is in an older building with exposed brick and wood - all original from the time the building was built.
One major area we focused on while developing this site was usability. This came in the form of grid-based design, visual cues to let a user know where he/she is within the site, and typographical hierarchy. All these things help visitors get to know the site without getting too confused with what does what or where they may be.
