How do I set up my email account using Apple Mail?

To set up your email account in Apple Mail, follow these steps:

  1. In Apple Mail, go to Mail > Preferences.
  2. In the Accounts section, click on the plus (+) sign in the lower left hand corner to add a new account.
  3. Enter your Full Name, Email Address and Password. (Whatever you put in the Full Name field will show up in the From: field when a message is sent.)
  4. Click Continue.
  5. Choose POP for Account Type (IMAP is discussed in another help doc).
  6. For Incoming Mail Server Description, simply enter a short name that will help you recognize the Incoming Mail Server setting (e.g., "Incoming").
  7. For Incoming Mail Server, enter mail.mydomain.com (where mydomain.com is your domain).
  8. Your User Name is your full email address.
  9. Enter your Password if it's not already in the field.
  10. Click Continue.
  11. If you get a pop up for Verify Certificate, don't panic; just click Connect.
  12. In the next screen, similar to Incoming Mail Server, give your Outgoing Mail Server a Description that will help you recognize it (e.g., "Outgoing")
  13. For Outgoing Mail Server, use the same as you did for Incoming Mail Server: mail.mydomain.com (where mydomain.com is your domain/URL).
  14. It's a good idea to keep the Use only this server option checked.
  15. Make sure that Use Authentication is checked. Your User Name and Password for this option should already be set. If not, make sure your User Name is your full email address.
  16. Click Continue.
  17. At this point, Mail will attempt to connect to the server and it may take some time. If it times out or takes more than a couple minutes, click Cancel and then click Continue. Then continue with the steps below.
  18. You'll see your Account Summary. Make sure Take account online option is checked.
  19. Click Create.
  20. In the Accounts panel you'll see your new email account listed. Making sure the new account is selected / highlighted, click on the Advanced tab on the right.
  21. At the bottom half of that panel you'll see a Port number with Use SSL checked. Uncheck Use SSL.
  22. You should be all set!
