According to Wired, Twitter paid bottom dollar for their bird graphic. They try real hard to link it to crowdsourcing too. But in my opinion, it's not. The designer of the graphic submitted it to a stock photo / illustration site for more *anyone* to purchase and use. Had they held a contest or posted on 99designs or something, that would be different.
