Just having a website for your business isn't enough these days. It has to work for you in more ways than just giving you bragging rights for being online. In order for it to work for you, you need to have some key things to make your site successful. And so that's what this blog post kicks off: a series of short articles on single tips for making your website really work for you. Let's get started shall we?

Set a Goal!

Okay, this may be a no brainer, but the fact of the matter is, a lot of businesses put a site up online without having clear goals on what the site is supposed to do for them. It's a lot like setting up shop and then sitting there, waiting for customers to come by the hundreds to buy your stuff. It's not going to happen that way.

Instead, examine what business goals you have. Are you trying to get more customers? Are you aiming to grow awareness? Or is it something else? Whatever it is, make note of it. Now take a look at your website. Does its purpose serve at least part of your over-arching business goal(s)? If it doesn't, it's time to reevaluate.

Your website should always – 24/7 – be working to help you achieve larger business goals. For instance, if you have a brick and mortar store, but also offer online sales and you're expecting to grow your sales by 30% this year, how much of that should be from online sales? Half? A quarter? Then take the steps to get your site optimized to meet that.

It really is that straightforward. The hard part is implementation.
