Is a blog more important than your website?

I recently heard someone say that a blog is more important than your website. I'm not sure I agree. The problem with blanket statements like that is that it's a blanket statement. It just doesn't apply to every single site out there. Additionally, how, in this context, is "important" defined? Let's take this very site, for example. I know our blog is important. Very important. However, it doesn't make it *more* important the rest of the site. In fact, I'd say it's not more important than our [portfolio](/portfolio/) which is partially the reason people get in touch with us for design work in the first place. You can argue that the two have different purposes and thus it's hard to say which one is more important. And I'd agree with you. That's partly why saying that your blog is more important is kind of silly. But let's take a look at a another factor: your site's goals. A blog is an incredibly wonderful tool. It helps you stay in front of your customers and prospects, helps your SEO efforts and positions you / your business as an expert and/or authority. But is it appropriate for all sites? No. How that gets determined is by evaluating your site's goals. Not every site will have the same goal. And those that have similar goals won't necessarily be using the same techniques and strategies to achieve them. So while a blog may work well to bring in leads for, say, a contractor, another contractor may find that their PPC campaigns work better. So the question remains, is a blog *more important* than your website? The answer. *It depends.* Taking a good look at your site goals will help you determine if a blog is appropriate and fits in with your overall marketing plan. If it does, great! (And chances are, it is a good idea.) If not, explore other avenues. If you're unsure, [talk to us](/contact/). As much as we'd love to build a blog for you it may just not be the right solution for you. We can help you determine if it is or isn't.
