Have you ever gotten an email that claimed to be from your bank, credit card company, or even your PayPal account? Those kinds of junk emails are called "phishing emails" and most of us have received at least one at some point or another.
The number of these kinds of emails is astonishing and doesn't look to be slowing down any time soon. In addition, those who create these emails are also creating fake websites. So what can you do to prevent getting caught in their traps? Here are some tips:
- Report spam (various techniques can be found doing a Google search)
- If you're not sure if the email is legit, don't take any chances. It's better to either not click on anything or just delete it.
- Delete emails from senders you don't recognize and/or have a suspicious subject line.
- Keep your antivirus and operating system software up to date.
- Enable spam/junk email filters on one or both, your server and your email program.
- Keep an eye on the URLs that you're at and make sure they relate to the website.
- Hover over links to see where they go before clicking on them.
- Be careful with website asking for personal information.
- Don't trust every site you visit.
