Hack-a-thons Have Their Place

At a local Meet Up group I belong to, the owner of a new business consulting company here in Portland posed the idea of having folks in our group critique her site. (Good!) It went further when someone suggested we do a "hack-a-thon" type of event to essentially recode / redesign the site in 20 minutes. (Not so good.)

While the idea seems good, the problem is that it's not going to solve any underlying problems the site might have. And if I may be so bold, it sounded like she wanted to get some design ideas for free, something that certainly doesn't sit well with me.
